In response to the precedent-setting nature
of the development and construction of the new Lord Stirling Community
School in downtown New Brunswick by Devco, the New Brunswick Board
of Education requested that Devco undertake the design, development,
and construction of a new city high school under the state's Educational
Facilities Construction and Financing Act. Devco was selected by
the New Jersey School Construction Corporation to build the new
high school as one of only six Demonstration Projects in the state.
The ultimate goal of this unique partnership is to bring about not
only a state-of-the-art, quality school facility for New Brunswick
students, but also to coordinate the development of the high school
with community design features and neighborhood revitalization efforts.
The facility features a cutting-edge design to accommodate both
current and future educational program needs. Through structured
"small learning communities" general instructional areas
have been designed to maximize flexibility. Classrooms can either
be stand-alone or combined for larger group instruction or special
projects. The architectural design of the school allows for educational
innovations such as an expansive performing arts program, a culinary
arts academy, and a technologically advanced media studies program.
The high school project gives New Brunswick and Devco an opportunity
to once again combine the planning and development of much needed
new school facilities with the important task of revitalizing a
neighborhood.
