Who is Alvin J. Rockoff and why did we name a building after him?

When it came time to name Rutgers' newest residence hall, the search was on for someone who truly symbolizes the partnership forged among Rutgers University, New Brunswick Development Corporation, and the City of New Brunswick in bringing the new student housing project to fruition -- someone who is both a strong advocate for the revitalization of the city, and a loyal friend to the university. As a lifelong and active member of the New Brunswick community, Alvin J. Rockoff truly epitomizes the concept of "town and gown."

Having been born and raised just over the Raritan River in Highland Park, Mr. Rockoff was naturally drawn to Rutgers when it came time to attend college. Following his graduation from Rutgers College in 1949, he remained a strong and genuine advocate for the university, and for the revitalization of the city of New Brunswick.

Mr. Rockoff is the former chairman of the Rutgers Board of Governors, the Rutgers Board of Trustees, the Rutgers Foundation, and the Rutgers Board of Overseers. He has served as a member of the board of directors of Devco for more than 20 years.

Now retired, Mr. Rockoff's professional career included serving as secretary and director of All Star Dairies of New Brunswick, a company started as Middlesex Farm Dairy by his father in the 1920s, and, president and director of Hubbard's Cupboard (a family-owned convenience store chain). He served as president and trustee of the NJ Milk Industry Association, and director of NJ Convenience Store Association.

Mr. Rockoff's commitment to the New Brunswick community, as witnessed by his participation in numerous civic, religious, and charitable activities over the years - including the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, Greater Middlesex County Jewish Federation, New Jersey Israel Commission, New Jersey Food Council, St. Peter's University Hospital Foundation, and the National Campaign Cabinet for Israel Bonds -- is truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.

Alvin J. Rockoff is a living symbol of the strong partnership that has been forged among Rutgers, the City of New Brunswick, and Devco. It seemed only fitting to name this new building after someone like Mr. Rockoff who has given so much of himself, his time, and his resources to the university, the city, and the community.
