Stone and glass come together in the work of Christopher Spath.
The artist carves raw stone, searching for balance between the natural
and the man-made. For him, glass-filled voids represent inner space,
the soul. In his piece for the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce
Development, the disparate elements work in concert to illuminate
the character of John J. Heldrich, a man of solid character and
clear vision. Most of Spath's recent work has focused on the challenge
of site specific work in public spaces; making a connection between
sculptural elements and the location either through visual representation
or conceptual reference to the history or purpose of the site. The
inspiration for The Heldrich piece is clearly a result of that focus.
The sculpture revolves around the concept of data analysis, a primary
purpose of the Center. The imagery of graphs and charts forms the
basis for the sculpture, primarily cut from pink and black carved
marble.
