Leap is celebrated for his ability to render vivid and textured
images in glass. The Garden of the Hesperides, the mythical
venue for the eleventh labor of Hercules, shows the Greek nymphs
at sunset tending the fruit of gods. The 10' x 10' installation
graces the main lobby of The Heldrich. It comprises enameled float
glass and glass mosaic tessera, and exudes warmth and welcome, with
a nod of approval toward a job well done, as does The Heldrich.
To complement the architecture and furnishings of The Heldrich,
Leap chose a style for the artwork which references the elegant
patterns and opulent surfaces of the Vienna Secessionist Movement,
most notably, the painter Gustav Klimt. The Golden Apples
features the three sisters with flowing red hair clothed in vibrantly
colored patterned gowns. Each holds a three-dimensional golden apple
in their extended hands. The tree from which the apples grow is
painted on the rear panel in playful swirls. According to Leap,
the subject matter communicates hospitality, renewal, and the elusive
promise of eternal youth.
